Why your book images print blurry: the 300 DPI rule, properly explained
The rule, stated correctly
You have heard "use 300 DPI." That is close but incomplete, and the missing words are why so many images print soft. The full rule is 300 pixels per inch at the printed size. An image does not have a resolution in a vacuum; it has a resolution only once you decide how large it will appear on the page. The same file can be gloriously sharp or embarrassingly soft depending on how big you print it.
So the number to care about is not a tag inside the file. It is a simple division you can do yourself.
The one calculation that matters
Take the pixel width of your image and divide it by the width, in inches, it will occupy on the page:
- pixels ÷ print inches ≥ 300 means it will print sharp.
- Below 300 it starts to soften; well below it looks obviously blurry or blocky.
Work an example. A 1200-pixel-wide photo printed 4 inches wide gives 1200 ÷ 4 = 300. Sharp. Print that same 1200-pixel photo 8 inches wide and you get 1200 ÷ 8 = 150. Soft. Nothing about the file changed; you simply asked too few pixels to cover too much paper.

Why the DPI tag lies to you
Every image file can store a DPI number, but it is only a note about intended print size. You can change it from 72 to 300 in an editor without adding a single pixel, and the image will not gain one scrap of detail. It will simply print smaller. Judging an image by its stored DPI is like judging a bucket by the label on it rather than the water inside. Always count the pixels and divide by the size you will print. That is the truth; the tag is just a suggestion.
Why web images are the usual offenders
Images made for the web are built to load fast and to look right on screens, which show images at roughly 72 to 96 pixels per inch. A picture that fills your monitor edge to edge may hold only a few hundred pixels across, which is plenty for a screen and nowhere near enough for a page. When you drop that file into a book and print it at any respectable size, the arithmetic above turns against you immediately. This is the number-one reason author images print blurry: the source was a screen image all along.
What the printers do about it
The vendors watch for this so a blurry book does not reach a customer. Amazon KDP flags images that fall below roughly 300 DPI at their placed size, and per IngramSpark guidance, images under about 200 DPI can be rejected outright rather than merely warned about. In other words, 300 is the target, and roughly 200 is a floor you do not want to test. Aim above 300 and you never see the warning at all.
What suffers the most
- Line art and diagrams. Crisp edges and thin lines expose low resolution instantly; a soft photo can pass where a soft chart looks broken.
- Text inside an image. A screenshot or a graphic with lettering is the harshest test there is, because the eye knows exactly how sharp type should be. Keep real text as text whenever you can.
- Heavily compressed JPEGs. JPEG compression adds its own blocky artifacts around edges, and those artifacts compound with low resolution. A small, over-compressed JPEG is the worst of both worlds.
Can upscaling save a small image?
Sometimes, partly. Upscaling software enlarges an image by estimating new pixels from the ones that exist, and here honesty matters: it cannot recover detail that was never captured in the first place. Modern AI-based upscalers are genuinely better than the old blur-and-hope methods and can lift a borderline image enough to pass, especially soft-focus photos. But they are a partial aid, not a cure, and they tend to struggle exactly where it hurts, on fine text and hard edges. Treat upscaling as a rescue for a near-miss, and reach for the original high-resolution file whenever one exists.
The quick checklist
- Find the pixel width of each image.
- Decide how many inches wide it will print.
- Divide. If the result is 300 or more, you are clear.
- If it falls short, source a larger original, print it smaller, or, as a last resort, upscale and inspect the result closely.
